I can't believe that twice since living in our home I have locked James and I outside accidentally twice--today being the second time. The first time, Andy was at the office in Le Roy so I was able to call him from our neighbor's home, and he was able to get back in about ten minutes to let us in.
Today, we were going to eat apples out on the front steps for our afternoon snack. It was around two in the afternoon so it was a nice, hot 90 degrees outside. We both went barefoot, and I will usually leave my keys and phone inside. Just before the door clicked shut my brain started to register that I had maybe perhaps locked the door out of habit, but I didn't react fast enough and heard the door click shut as I began to turn it. No!!!! We were locked outside!! I didn't have my phone, and even if I could call Andy he was about a 45 minute drive away down in Nunde. I certainly was feeling dumb and frustrated. Of course, I was thinking it was about time we put a hide-a-key outside, but it wasn't going to do much good at the moment. So, I decided to just sit down with James and enjoy the apple for the time being. There wasn't a need to panic just yet.
As we were eating I was wondering how we would survive outside for two and a half hours in the heat. We had the hose in the back, his turtle sandbox (that does not have sand in it yet but does have some toys), we had the cube with the slide, and shade. The hose would help with thirst and with keeping cool. Fortunately, I had just changed his diaper so we were good on that. At one point, I looked under our front mat to see if perhaps Beth or Heather had forgotten to take house keys that I had left for them a couple weeks before, but there was nothing there. As I continuted to think over our survival, our neighbor, Ron, pulled into the driveway. It then hit me what I needed to do.
I went to Ron and asked if I could borrow a ladder. When I explained we were locked out he told me we should have a hide-a-key. A couple sarcastic responses popped into my head in regard to his comment, but I kept them to myself since I needed his help. He brought the ladder over to the window I wanted, which is where our A/C unit is. I didn't have to tackle with a screen, Andy and I never screwed the unit into the window, so I was able to climb up and maneuver the a/c unit onto a chair in the play room. I was able to climb through the window, and we were saved!!! We weren't even outside for ten minutes for that whole time. We definitely lucked out. Of course, Ron and everybody reading this now knows how to break into our house. :)
I took Ron a treat over as a thank-you, but he never had a chance to eat it because his wife Denise had it this evening and was asking me for the recipe. It definitely was a funny moment, but I think we are going to need to do a hide-a-key.
